‘Thunderbolts’: ‘The Bear’ Writer Joanna Calo Is Working on the Script!!

Before cameras begin rolling on Thunderbolts, the project has received a major update, with the studio hiring Joanna Calo to work on the script for the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Calo is a writer and an executive producer on The Bear, the successful FX series about a struggling restaurant in Chicago. Marvel Studios had previously hired Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, to write the screenplay for the upcoming adventure that will feature villains and anti-heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking on a mission that was supposed to end with their deaths. It remains to be seen what the story of Thunderbolts will look like with Joanna Calo joining that writing efforts for the blockbuster.

Thunderbolts is set to begin filming in March, and it will feature the return of several characters introduced in previous movies set in the franchise. Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) were all announced as a part of the team back when the Thunderbolts’ movie was revealed, with the characters presumably under the leadership of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Additional details regarding the special mission the team is supposed to take on are currently kept under wraps.

Jake Schreier, who previously directed Paper Towns, was hired by Marvel Studios to helm Thunderbolts, with the film currently scheduled for a May 2, 2025 release. The filmmaker has worked on music videos throughout the majority of his career, expanding his creative horizons with titles such as Robot & Frank. The upcoming adventure about a team of villains and anti-heroes is set to be the biggest project of the director’s career, taking characters from different corners of the MCU and bringing them together for a secret assignment. The leads from Thunderbolts were introduced in Black Widow, Ant-Man and the Wasp and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The Fantastic Jump From ‘The Bear’ to the MCU

Joanna Calo has worked through an impressive trajectory on television over the course of her career, serving as a director on The Bear, and a producer on acclaimed projects such as BoJack Horseman and Hacks. Calo will continue to add blockbuster projects to her resume with Thunderlbots, with the movie introducing a new team very different from what the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy have displayed on the big screen. But Calo isn’t the only talent from The Bear to join the franchise, taking into account the recent announcement that Ebon Moss-Bachrach is set to portray Ben Grimm in The Fantastic Four. In addition to that, Ayo Edebiri was set to appear in Thunderbolts, before having to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.
