‘Grotesquerie’: Ryan Murphy Sets Surprise New FX Series for Fall Release!!

Surprise! Ryan Murphy is preparing to drop a new series with his longtime collaborative partners over at FX. The man behind such hits as American Horror Story and Feud kept his latest project, Grotesquerie, on the hush hush but is now coming full steam ahead with casting announcements and even a short teaser. Starring in the new series include the likes of Niecy Nash-Betts (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country), and Lesley Manville (Magpie Murders). Aside from projects like Glee and The Politician, the majority of Murphy’s work has at least a twinge of darkness to them, if not completely soaked into the horror realm. As if you couldn’t tell from the title, Grotesquerie will follow in the footsteps of Murphy’s more terrifying titles.

Taking to his Instagram, just in time to give us a bump into the weekend, Murphy shared the debut teaser which features the voice of Nash-Betts on what sounds like a phone call. Beyond the white letters of the cast’s names and the reveal that the horror drama will be arriving this fall on FX, nothing else is seen during the teaser but Nash-Betts’ voiceover does give some clues to the plot. The character speaks slowly but with a tremor in her voice and talks about a “crime scene” and the “evil” that surrounds her. By the end of her voicemail, she’s begging the unknown receiver to “come back,” adding, “It’s not getting better. And I keep needing to hear your answers, because something’s happening around us, and nobody sees but me.”

Grotesquerie will serve as a reunion between Nash-Betts and Murphy, as the two most recently worked together on the award-winning dramatized true crime series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. For her exquisite work on the production, Nash-Betts took home an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series. Like the Reno 911! star Vance will also be enjoying a reunion with Murphy, with whom he worked on The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, a gig that would nab the actor what else but an Emmy. With both Nash-Betts and Vance having accumulated Emmys during their time on set with Murphy, they’re likely gunning for another batch of nominations following Grotesquerie. For Manville, the actress who will next appear on the big screen in Back to Black, the project will be her first (of possibly many) collaborations with Murphy.

Ryan Murphy and FX: A Match Made In Heaven

While Murphy has long been working with FX to deliver audiences plenty of engaging and out of the box content, Grotesquerie will be a milestone for the creative and network as it marks their first project together since he struck an overall deal with Disney. This will be a big move for Murphy as his most recent productions such as Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Ratched, and Hollywood were all part of his prior deal with Netflix. In the past, the director and producer has worked with FX on familiar titles like Nip/Tuck, Pose, and the American Horror Story franchise.

As of right now, no further details surrounding Grotesquerie have been revealed but stay tuned for more information.
