If you’re a horror fan, then there’s a good chance you have become a fan of Ti West’s X franchise that debuted in 2022. Composed of X and Pearl, these heightened A24 slashers took the genre by storm thanks to star Mia Goth’s terrifying dual roll. We’ve been eagerly awaiting more news on the upcoming third film in the franchise, MaXXXine. After a teaser trailer shown at the end of Pearl got genre fans buzzing, plot details and news on the film have been sparse. However, now MaXXXine has been given the summer release date of July 5, 2024, according to Deadline.
While horror might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to America’s Independence Day weekend, that has never made A24 shy away from that holiday date. Horror fans are still traumatized by Ari Aster’s Midsummar, which premiered on that same weekend back in 2019. However, for MaXXXine, this slot is extra fitting given that this horror franchise is all about examining the American dream. How that concept can lead to a tragic false sense of hope and psychological torture.
What Is ‘MaXXXine’ About?
As we’re still waiting for MaXXXine’s first full-length trailer, specific plot details are being kept under a blood-soaked Hollywood star. What we do know is the film will catch up with Goth’s character Maxine after the events of X where she survived a Texas Chainsaw–style massacre and killed her haunting mirror image, Pearl. The film also brings us to a new decade, in the 80s, at the height of the VHS boom. After those horrific events and a childhood that X implied was anything but rosy, Maxine has finally made it big in the Hollywood lights. That’s something Pearl would never accomplish.
Goth this time around will be joined by another star-studded cast featuring Halsey, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan, Kevin Bacon, Giancarlo Esposito, and Lily Collins. Another detail of the film different from previous entries in the franchise is that this slasher will be framed in the classic whodunit murder mystery mold. Any fan of late 90s and early 2000s slashers is sure to get a kick out of Maxine’s next nightmare because of that. It’s also going to be exciting to see what else Goth brings to the table considering her performance in Pearl was nothing short of Oscar-worthy.
There May be More ‘X’ to Come
It was originally thought that MaXXXine would be the end of the X trilogy of films. However, late last month West revealed that he has an idea for a fourth film in the franchise. As fans of this slasher series know well by now, we’ll just have to wait till the end of MaXXXine in July to see if there’s another mysterious teaser for the next X murder spree.
MaXXXine slashes into theaters on July 5, 2024. Check out the title teaser above and stay tuned at Collider for further updates.
