Noah Wyle is headed back to the operating room. The ER vet will return to medical drama as the star and executive producer of The Pitt, a new Max series. The streamer has given a fifteen-episode, straight to series order for the series. The Pittsburgh-set series will take a realistic look at the challenges faced by frontline medical staff in a modern hospital.
Wyle will be accompanied by a duo of behind-the-scenes creators from his ER days. The Pitt will be showrun by R. Scott Gemmill, who wrote and produced ER from its sixth to thirteenth seasons, before moving on to NCIS: Los Angeles. John Wells, a veteran of ER and the Vietnam War-set medical drama China Beach, will executive produce alongside Wyle. Says Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO, “It’s no secret Scott, Noah, and John know how to make great television. When they came to us with the idea of reinvigorating the medical TV genre with a fresh, realistic look at today’s modern hospitals, we knew we had to jump on it. Their all-star collaboration, along with their impeccable storytelling and unwavering passion they bring to every project, is the perfect prescription for this show to become the next great medical drama.”
Who is Noah Wyle?
Born in Los Angeles, Wyle had small parts in A Few Good Men and Swing Kids before landing the part of medical student John Carter on NBC‘s medical drama ER; the series soon became a hit, and Wyle was one of its breakout stars. He was the last of the show’s original cast to leave, staying with the series through its eleventh season in 2005; he returned for a guest appearance the subsequent season, and came back for five more episodes in its fifteenth and final season. He appeared in more episodes of the series than any other actor, and during his final season was the highest-paid dramatic actor on TV. Following his departure from ER, he starred in TNT‘s science fiction drama Falling Skies, and then in the network’s fantasy-adventure series The Librarians, reprising the role of Flynn Carsen that he’d played in a series of TV movies. He currently stars in Prime Video‘s Leverage: Redemption.
The Pitt will be produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Gemmill will write the first episode and executive produce the series alongside Wyle, Wells, and JWP’s Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan, and Michael Hissrich.
No release date has yet been set for The Pitt. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
