It’s a pretty busy day for Gabriel Basso fans. Earlier today, Netflix announced that the hit show The Night Agent has just wrapped filming Season 2 — which means it’s way past time we got excited about it. Now, Deadline announced that Basso may already have another major project in the works. According to the website, the actor is in final negotiations to star in the next movie by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker).
Aside from Basso, another name attached to the project is Jared Harris. The Chernobyl and Mad Men star is also reportedly in final negotiations to integrate the cast of the Bigelow movie, which means that Netflix might confirm this information as soon as a deal is in place for both parties. The streamer is also staying mum about the roles that each actor will play in the movie, but this early in the production this kind of secrecy is expected.
What we do know at this point is that the movie is a thriller that also stars Idris Elba (Hijack) and Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One). Early reports suggest that the thriller is political and might take place inside the walls of the White House during a national crisis. If the information is correct, the movie wouldn’t stray too far from the themes that Bigelow has covered in her career, especially in recent titles like Detroit and Zero Dark Thirty.
Didn’t Netflix Ditch The Kathryn Bigelow Movie?
If the information seems confusing to you, it’s because it is a little. Back in April, the streaming giant announced that a long-brewing project called Aurora that they were developing with the director would not move forward — at least not with them. However, this doesn’t mean that Netflix is cutting ties with Bigelow. The streamers’ executives had revealed to Collider that they were very interested in working with her, which is why they decided to greenlight the filmmaker’s next project, still untitled.
This Netflix movie will be the first one helmed by Bigelow since 2017. Considering that it’s still in the early stages, it might not hit the screens earlier than 2025, which means that Bigelow fans will have by then spent eight years without a new movie. If Bigelow‘s scrapped project Aurora gets traction with another studio, however, we might see more of the filmmaker in the next couple of years.
Netflix is yet to release more information about the new Kathryn Bigelow movie, including its title and additional cast members.
