Is Detective Marquez Joe’s Big Adversary In You Season 5?
When the first teaser for You season 5 was released by Netflix in June 2023, actor Penn Badgley mentioned Joe would be faced with a new adversary in the final episodes. While it’s unclear who this enemy could be, someone within law enforcement seems likely, given the number of crimes he’s committed in order to achieve his new status. This makes Mau’s Marquez a viable candidate for this position, as she could be conducting an investigation that leads her to questioning the main character about his checkered past.
Marquez being the next big threat to Joe’s livelihood makes sense for the final season, since the law was bound to catch up to him eventually. However, since he’s been able to slip away from his crimes so many times throughout the show, it’s unclear if the detective would be able to stop him, even if she did learn everything about his past. This is coupled by the protection he now has thanks to Kate, likely making it difficult for any one character to bring the protagonist to justice.
Instead, it’s possible Marquez will be teaming up with past characters from You, victims of his past actions being the only real way to bring him to justice. But, given the experience and power Joe now has to evade legal repercussions, even a plethora of faces from his past might not be enough to stop him.
