‘Star Wars’: ‘X-Men’ Alum Simon Kinberg Is Working on a New Trilogy!!

There’s a new Star Wars trilogy in the works. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg (The Killer’s Game) has signed on to write and produce a new trio of space operas for Lucasfilm. Deadline reports that Disney‘s parent, Lucasfilm, has no comment on the news. Mike Fleming Jr. reports that there’s conflicting information regarding whether this trilogy of films will serve as episodes ten, eleven, and twelve of the Skywalker Saga that began with George LucasStar Wars in 1977, was revisited by Lucas in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the prequel trilogy, and was seemingly concluded with Disney‘s sequel trilogy in the 2010s; that may be the case, or it may begin an entirely new saga.

It is also unclear how this will connect with the other Star Wars films Disney has in the pipeline, including The Mandalorian and Grogu, a spin-off of the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian; a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that is to star Daisy Ridley as her sequel trilogy character Rey; and James Mangold‘s film set in the distant past of the Star Wars galaxy.

Who Is Simon Kinberg?

Kinberg‘s first screenwriting credit came in the 2005 Ice Cube action sequel XXX: State of the Union. Following that up, he wrote the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie action comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith before penning X-Men: The Last Stand. That kicked off a long association between Kinberg and Marvel‘s merry mutants, as he also wrote X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix; he made his directorial debut with the latter, as well. Other films he’s written include Jumper, Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes, Josh Trank‘s Fantastic Four, and The 355. In the realm of television, he executive produced Designated Survivor, Jordan Peele‘s Twilight Zone reboot, and the recent Colin Farrell Apple TV+ noir series Sugar. He also created the science fiction series Invasion for Apple, which was renewed for a third season earlier this year.

This isn’t Kinberg‘s first foray into the Star Wars galaxy. He was brought on by Disney to help develop new Star Wars projects after they acquired Lucasfilm; he was subsequently thanked in the credits of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and credited as a story consultant on the former. He also co-created the animated series Star Wars: Rebels.

Simon Kinberg‘s Star Wars trilogy is in development; no titles or release dates have yet been announced. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates. You can watch the rest of the Star Wars franchise on Disney+.
