Harry and Sally are meeting again. When Harry Met Sally… stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are getting back together for…something. The duo posted a cryptic update on Instagram, promising “something iconic.”
The Instagram post depicts the two on a loveseat behind floral wallpaper, replicating the setting of the “interview” segments of When Harry Met Sally… In a caption, Ryan states “It’s finally happening, we’re reuniting for something iconic. Can’t wait to show you all soon.” The post doesn’t elaborate on the nature of their new collaboration, but given that Super Bowl LIX is two and a half weeks away, there’s a good chance their reunion is the subject of a big-budget Super Bowl ad. In recent years, a number of ads have been based around popular movies of the past, including The Big Lebowski, Die Hard, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. It remains to be seen if Harry will meet Sally again for the purposes of selling Bud Light, Tide, or Doritos.
What is ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ About?
Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron (who based the two main characters on Reiner and his then-wife, Penny Marshall), When Harry Met Sally… follows Harry Burns (Crystal) and Sally Albright (Ryan), two acquaintances who run into each other periodically over the years. Over time, they grow closer, despite Harry’s belief that men and women can never be platonic friends. However, when Sally and Harry set their respective best friends Marie (Carrie Fisher) and Jess (Bruno Kirby) up with each other, they end up on a collision course with each other – and romance. The film was a huge critical and financial success, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and making $92.8 million USD on a $16 million budget. It also established Ryan as the reigning queen of the romantic comedy, which she would reinforce with Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, both of which were also penned by Ephron. The film remains a classic of romantic comedy, and its famous Katz’s Delicatessen scene, in which Ryan proves that a woman can fake an orgasm (much to the appreciation of Reiner‘s mother Estelle Reiner, in a memorable cameo) is one of the most iconic scenes in comedy history.
Crystal recently starred in the Apple TV+ supernatural mystery miniseries Before, and continues to voice Mike Wazowski in the Disney+ animated series Monsters at Work. Ryan most recently starred alongside David Duchovny in the 2023 romantic comedy What Happens Later, which she also directed and co-wrote.
