‘The Wrong Girls’: Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat to Lead New Comedy!!

Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat are The Wrong Girls. The duo will star with Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, and LaKeith Stanfield in a new Neon comedy that’s already filming. Variety reports that it will be one of the first independent films to shoot in Los Angeles since the devastating wildfires that ravaged the area last month.

The Wrong Girls stars Stewart and Shawkat as two codependent stoner pals; their humdrum lives get upended when they get mistaken for two different people. No other plot or character details are forthcoming, but the title brings to mind Alfred Hitchcock‘s man-on-the-run thriller The Wrong Man, or its comedy takeoff, the 1997 Dave Foley movie The Wrong Guy. The film is the feature directorial debut of Dylan Meyer, Stewart‘s fiancée; she also wrote the film’s script. It may be the same film Stewart mentioned in an interview in 2023, when she said “Me and Dylan are writing a movie. It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f***ing stupid.” It boasts a strong supporting cast, including Rogen (The Fabelmans), Nanjiani (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah), Zack Fox (Abbott Elementary), and Tony Hale (Arrested Development). The film is also set to feature a performance by Philadelphia punk band Mannequin Pussy.

What Have Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat Been in Lately?

The onetime teen star of the Twilight series, Stewart has reinvented herself as an indie sensation with a series of daring roles in independent films. Recently, she starred in the thriller Love Lies Bleeding and the road comedy Sacramento. She can currently be seen in the science fiction romance Love Me as the human avatar of an artificially intelligent weather buoy. She is next set to star in Panos Cosmatos‘ vampire thriller, Flesh of the Gods, with Oscar Isaac; and will play pioneering astronaut Sally Ride in The Challenger. Her feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, is currently in post-production. Shawkat, best known for her role as Maebe Funke on Arrested Development, recently starred on FX‘s The Old Man, which was canceled this year after two seasons; she also recently guested on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and Severance. She will next star in Atropia, a satirical film centering around a fake Middle Eastern town created by the US military: it premiered at Sundance earlier this year.

The Wrong Girls will be produced by Maggie McLean, Stewart, and Meyer for Nevermind Pictures; Alex McAtee, James Weaver, Rogen, and Evan Goldberg for Point Grey; and Allison Carter and Jon Read for Savage Rose Productions. Overseeing for Neon are Jason Wald, Claire Timmons, and Kate Gondwe.

The Wrong Girls is now in production; no release date has yet been announced.
