Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of Carrie just locked in a major casting piece. Siena Agudong has officially joined the upcoming Amazon Studios series in the series regular role of Sue Snell, as per a report by Variety. Agudong becomes the first confirmed cast member for the adaptation of Stephen King’s seminal 1974 horror novel, while Variety previously reported that Summer H. Howell is in negotiations to star as Carrie White herself. While the streamer hasn’t actually officially announced the series, it’s inevitable that it will be soon, and the show is now eyeing a summer shoot in Vancouver.
Agudong most recently starred in and executive produced the Tubi original The QB and Me, and she also was the female lead in Kevin Smith’s coming-of-age film The 4:30 Movie. She’ll also star in What She Doesn’t Know, the directorial debut of Juan Pablo Arias Munoz. Her past television credits include Netflix’s Resident Evil, No Good Nick, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn, and Hawaii Five-O. but this will most likely end up being her most high profile role yet.
The Amazon series is described as a “bold and timely” reimagining of the story written by King, and will follow Carrie White, who’s been raised away from normal society by her horrific mother, but who is suddenly thrust into the chaotic world of public high school following her father’s sudden death. Carrie soon finds herself at the center of a bullying scandal that fractures her community, at the same time her burgeoning and terrifying telekinetic powers start to bubble up to the surface. Flanagan, the mastermind behind The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher, will write, executive produce, serve as showrunner, and direct the series.
Who Is Sue Snell?
In King’s novel and its many screen adaptations, Sue Snell is a popular high school student who initially joins her classmates in bullying Carrie, but is later overcome with guilt and attempts to make amends. The character was first portrayed by Amy Irving in Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, and reappeared in the 1999 sequel The Rage: Carrie 2. Sue was later played by Kandyse McClure in the 2002 TV movie, and Gabriella Wilde in the 2013 theatrical remake, so Agudong certainly has plenty of inspiration from which to draw her own take on another iconic character from the pages of horror’s greatest writer.
