Netflix is adapting Jane Austen‘s classic novel Pride and Prejudice, and they’ve already assembled an all-star cast for the oft-adapted work. Yesterday, Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) was rumored to be in talks to play Mr. Darcy, and we now know that Emma Corrin (Nosferatu) will join him as female lead Elizabeth Bennet, and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) will play Mrs. Bennet. Deadline reports that the production will be a six-episode miniseries, and will film in the UK later this year.
The series will be written by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). Says Alderton, “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.” This will be Netflix‘s second stab at an Austen adaptation: the streamer released Carrie Cracknell‘s adaptation of Persuasion, which starred Dakota Johnson and Cosmo Jarvis, in 2022.
What is ‘Pride and Prejudice’ About?
Austen’s second novel, Pride and Prejudice, was first published in 1813. It centers around Elizabeth Bennet, a young woman who is determined to marry well to support the rest of her family. She soon becomes entangled with Mr. Darcy, “a single man in possession of a good fortune,” in one of the greatest romances in English literature. One of Austen’s most popular works, it has been adapted for the screen numerous times. 1940 saw Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier take on the roles of the book’s central characters, while Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen starred in a well-regarded 2005 film. However, the most popular adaptation of the book is the 1995 BBC miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, whose wet-shirt scene has become iconic. Looser adaptations include the India-set Bride and Prejudice, the horror comedy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and the gay rom-com Fire Island.
Netflix‘s Pride and Prejudice will be executive produced by director Lyn and star Corrin, as well as Laura Lankester, Will Johnston. and Louise Mutter for Lookout Point; it is the first project to be executive produced by Corrin, who had two major hits last year with Nosferatu and Deadpool & Wolverine. It will be produced by Lisa Osborne.
Pride and Prejudice will film in the UK later this year; no release date has yet been announced.
