It’s hardly been 24 hours after the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale, but one of the show’s biggest stars has already addressed his future in the MCU. The latest Marvel Disney+ series returns Marvel Netflix veterans Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, both of whom have appeared in other projects like Echo earlier in the Multiverse Saga. Daredevil: Born Again also brought back Jon Bernthal to play The Punisher, and it was confirmed in the lead-up to Born Again that he would star in a solo Punisher project coming next year. D’Onofrio recently sat down with Variety to chat about the Daredevil: Born Again finale, and he addressed his potential role in the upcoming Punisher special and also spoke about its connections to Daredevil: Born Again:
“We have to see what the one-off thing that they’re planning on doing with the Punisher, that should be interesting to see. I don’t know if it’s a “What If…?” film or if it’s connected to our series or not, but it’ll be interesting to see. I love Jon’s Punisher. I think he does a great job on it.”
The Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale perfectly sets up Season 2, which is currently in production and confirmed to be coming next in March. The post-credit scene also seemingly sets up Jon Bernthal’s solo Punisher special after he escapes from Fisk’s basement dungeon, but it seems this might not be as cut and dry as the show makes it look. It would be surprising if Bernthal’s Punisher special wasn’t connected to the MCU’s Daredevil: Born Again at all, but the Multiverse Saga hasn’t prioritized connectivity in the same way that the Infinity Saga did, so the project might be more of a standalone than we were expecting. Story details about The Punisher special are being kept under wraps, but we know that Bernthal will make his feature writing debut on the project, which will also be directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green.
Jon Bernthal Has Two New Movies in Theaters This Month
Jon Bernthal features in a small role in Rami Malek’s The Amateur, the spy thriller from James Hawes that debuted in theaters last weekend. The film follows a CIA Analyst who goes on the hunt for the terrorists who murdered his wife. Next weekend, Bernthal will also debut another new movie in theaters with The Accountant 2. The action sequel will see him reunite with Ben Affleck to play Braxton, the brother of Christian Wolff. Bernthal has also been set for a role in The Odyssey, the next film from Christopher Nolan.
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher special is expected to be released next year, but does not have an official release date.
