‘Maul: Shadow Lord’: A New Darth Maul Series is Coming to Disney+ Next Year!!

While most expected information about new movies and TV shows to be relatively quiet at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm’s Panel at the event last night was anything but. Collider‘s Maggie Lovitt was in attendance when it was announced that Lucasfilm is developing a new Darth Maul animated series, dubbed Maul: Shadow Lord, which will even see Sam Witwer return and reprise his role as the Dark Side Force user. Witwer is also famous for voicing Darth Vader’s secret apprentice Starkiller in The Force Unleashed games, where he is also the voice behind Emperor Palpatine. The trailer shows Maul wreaking havoc on supply lines while also taking on a new Twi’lek apprentice, promising to train her to her fullest potential. It even shows off Maul’s ability as one of the deadliest fighters in Star Wars history, taking on large groups of foes with ease.

Shawn Levy also took the stage with Ryan Gosling at Star Wars Celebration to officially announce their new movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, which has been set for release on May 28, 2027. The standalone story takes place a few years after the events of Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker, but details about the film and additional casting are being kept under wraps. It was reported a few days ago that Anora star and recent Oscar-winner Mikey Madison passed on a role in the film, which will be penned by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project, Your Friends & Neighbors). Fans in attendance at Star Wars Celebration were also shown new footage of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the Star Wars movie coming to theaters on May 22, 2026. Pedro Pascal even took the stage with newcomer Sigourney Weaver (Avatar, Alien) to promote the film.

Darth Maul Has a Rich History in ‘Star Wars’

Darth Maul made his Star Wars debut in The Phantom Menace, the first installment in the prequel trilogy led by Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor, and while he ultimately dies at the end of the film, that hasn’t stopped Star Wars from utilizing him. Maul, voiced by Witwer, is a central figure in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, the two most popular Star Wars animated projects. Maul takes on a large role near the end of The Clone Wars as Ashoka’s primary foe and the sparking fire between the Mandalorian Wars, and he also briefly takes Ezra Bridger under his wing in Rebels. He’s also had an apprentice before in Savage Opress, a fellow Nightbrother pulled from his home on Dathomir.

Maul: Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ next year.
