‘Greyhound 2’: Tom Hanks Sequel is Officially in the Works!!

Tom Hanks‘ Commander Ernie Krause will be back in action soon. The Apple TV+ World War II naval thriller Greyhound is getting a sequel. Deadline reports that Hanks will return to both star and pen the script, and a number of creatives from the first film are on board, as well. The film is set to begin shooting early next year.

In addition to Hanks, director Aaron Schneider (Get Low), who helmed the original film, is back for the sequel, as is producer Gary Goetzman from Hanks‘ production company Playtone. The rest of the cast is currently in negotiations, but Deadline reports most of the cast from the original will return. The sequel will reportedly see Krause and the crew of the USS Keeling take part in the latter half of World War II, including the Normandy landings and action in the Pacific theater. The original was one of Apple TV+‘s first original movies, and is reportedly one of their most popular. The movie is expected to begin filming in January 2026, in Sydney, Australia.

What Is ‘Greyhound’ About?

Based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd, by C. S. Forester (best known for his Horatio Hornblower novels and The African Queen), Greyhound centers around the Keeling, a US Navy destroyer (radio call sign “Greyhound”) tasked with escorting merchant vessels through the U-boat-infested Atlantic during the early days of America’s entry into World War II. The Keeling is captained by Ernie Krause (Hanks), who is a seasoned veteran of the Navy, but has never seen combat. As they venture into the “Black Pit,” a region of the mid-Atlantic out of range of air support, they’re besieged by a merciless wolf pack of German submarines, whose commander (Thomas Kretschmann, Infinity Pool) taunts his victims over the radio. Krause has to muster all his experience as he commands the rest of his convoy to evade and destroy their pursuers. The film also stars Stephen Graham (Adolescence) as Lieutenant Commander Charlie Cole, and Elisabeth Shue (The Boys) as Krause’s fiancée. It was Hanks‘ third stint as screenwriter, after That Thing You Do! and Larry Crowne.

Greyhound was initially set for a theatrical release, but those plans were sunk by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was acquired by Apple instead. Nevertheless, it was well-received by critics, and holds a 78% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, Collider‘s Matt Goldberg called it “an incredibly well-made tribute to World War II naval warfare.

The Greyhound sequel will begin filming early next year; no title or release date have yet been announced.
