If you made it a tradition of watching The Holdovers every Christmas because you can’t get enough of it, you will be happy to know that Miramax feels the same way. In a new report, Variety reveals that the production company is looking to transform several of its biggest titles into TV shows or limited series. One of them is the Oscar-winning comedy/drama, which first debuted in theaters in late 2023.
Since The Holdovers is in early development, there are not many details about the adaptation just yet. However, head of Miramax Jonathan Glickman wants director Alexander Payne (The Descendants) to be involved in the production. The reason why he wants that is very simple, as he stated:
“You need to have some connective tissue with the original property. It gives legitimacy to a project so it doesn’t seem like just a cash grab.”
The good thing about a Holdovers TV series is that it would give a lot more breathing room for the characters we came to know and love to shine, but at this point we don’t know if the series will follow the same group of characters or not. One thing is sure, though: it would be pretty great to see Paul Giamatti (Black Mirror), Dominic Sessa (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Only Murders in the Building) share the screen again.
‘The Holdovers’ Can Easily Work As A TV Series
There is certainly room for more characters in The Holdovers, since the story takes place in a boarding school. However, the movie is a different take on the setting, since it covers the holiday period in which some students have nowhere to go back two while classes take a winter break. A TV series could easily cover different groups of students dealing with the teachers that hang back in “baby-sitting duties.”
