Before Chris Hemsworth dons the cape and swings the Stormbreaker in Avengers: Doomsday, the actor has signed on to take a deep dive into the ocean for Patrick Vollrath’s submarine thriller titled, Subversion, which is greenlit at Amazon MGM. The movie, eyeing a fall production start in Australia, is described as a “Die Hard on a submarine” style thriller. Vollrath will direct from a script written by Andrew Ferguson, whose scripts usually land on the Black List, with one titled Blood Rush also in development at Amazon.
The story will follow a once-promising Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters by a cartel-like operation. When he’s thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, “the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.”
Vollrath has proven his mettle with previous credits like 7500, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a pilot stuck in his cockpit. With a contained premise of a submarine and Hemsworth assumingly going up against bad guys while on it (like Die Hard), sounds like a delicious opportunity for impeccable action.
Where Will We See Chris Hemsworth Next?
Hemsworth is not only famous for playing Thor in the MCU but also for his action-heavy roles in films like Extraction. He was last seen in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga as antagonist Dementus. He’ll be seen in Amazon’s next Crime 101, an all-star thriller that reunites him with MCU co-star Mark Ruffalo along with Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry, and Monica Barbaro in its cast. The movie is currently in post-production. Also, he’ll continue to play Tyler Rake in Extraction 3, which reunites him with director Sam Hargrave. He is also reportedly set to play titular Prince Charming in Disney’s iteration, dedicated to the character being helmed by Paul King.
As for fans who want to see the continuation of the story of God of Thunder, he’ll be seen in Avengers: Doomsday. Interestingly, his name was the first in the game of chairs that Marvel played with fans. He’s also the only OG Avenger who has been officially announced for the movie which will reunite him with Robert Downey Jr., who is set to play big bad Doctor Doom. Last we saw Thor was in Thor: Love and Thunder that saw him hanging out with his daughter in the end. It’ll be interesting to see where Doomsday leaves the character.
No further details about Subversion have been revealed.
