‘Elle’: First Set Images Tease the ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Series!! Check It Out!!

The new Elle Woods is out and about in new set images from the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. Lexi Minetree, who was handpicked by original star Reese Witherspoon to portray the younger version of the character, is clad head-to-toe in pink in the new images, which come via Backgrid. The prequel series, Elle, is set to stream on Prime Video. The images portray the high-school-aged Woods on a shopping trip with a group of friends, all wearing distinctly 1990s fashions. That’s in keeping with the series’ timeframe, which will depict the high school years of Woods before the events of the 2001 movie, which saw her head off to law school and prove to be surprisingly adept at jurisprudence.

The film subsequently spawned one theatrical sequel, a failed TV pilot, and a Broadway musical. The role launched Witherspoon to superstardom, and remains one of her most iconic roles. In the images, the series is filming on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles; it’s an iconic shopping district and one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the world. According to producer Witherspoon, the series takes its inspiration from a surprising source: the Addams Family spin-off Wednesday. Says Witherspoon, “…I was like ‘we should do Elle Woods in high school.’ Because I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school.”

While none of the cast from the film is returning for Elle, thanks to its prequel nature, it has lined up an impressive array of supporting actors to populate Woods’ world. June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie) and Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do!) will play Elle’s wealthy parents, Eva and Wyatt; they were portrayed fleetingly in the original films by singer-actor Tane McClure and Days of Our LivesJames Read. Starring alongside them are Chandler Kinney (Lethal Weapon), Jessica Belkin (American Horror Story), Logan Shroyer (This Is Us), Jacob Moskovitz (Y2K), Gabrielle Policano (Babygirl), and Zac Looker (A Kind of Spark) as Elle’s fellow high school students, and Amy Pietz (Caroline in the City) as no-nonsense high school secretary Donna.

Elle was created by Laura Kittrell (Insecure); she will also co-showrun the series with Caroline Dries (Batwoman). Kittrell and Dries also executive produce with Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine and Marc Platt, who produced both Legally Blonde films. Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) will direct the first two episodes.

Elle is now in production for Prime Video; no release date has yet been announced.
