‘Endless Night’: Another Agatha Christie Mystery Is Being Adapted by the BBC!!

The unrivaled Queen of the murder mystery, Agatha Christie, has had many of her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections receive the adaptation treatment, often at the hands of the BBC. Now, in an unsurprising yet exciting announcement cited via Radio Times, Christie is having another of her mysteries adapted by the Beeb, namely her 1967 novel Endless Night, which has received a three-part series order. The adaptation is already placed in the capable and experienced hands of The Sixth Commandment‘s Sarah Phelps, who has already made five separate Christie-based shows for the BBC, including And Then There Were None, The Witness for the Prosecution, and Ordeal by Innocence. Excited about her involvement, Phelps said in a statement:

One of Agatha Christie’s last novels, this is a chilling story of love, sex, deceit and death, of how far we’ll go to get our heart’s desire and what we’ll do when night falls and the wolves start circling

A particular favorite of Christie herself, Endless Night follows Michael Rogers, a man who finds himself working as a chauffeur for a famous designer. The synopsis continues, “Transfixed by Santonix’s latest project, a beautiful house in the English countryside, Mike dreams of meeting the love of his life and taking up residence. But unbeknownst to Mike, the house that he has set his heart on has a dark past that goes back for centuries. Local legend says that it is haunted by a curse that no one escapes.” Mike then finds himself moving into the house with Ellie, with the pair recently becoming romantically involved. However, “as increasingly strange and chilling events occur, they start to wonder if the curse is real and means to destroy them. Or, that someone is intent on terrifying them to death.”

The BBC’s Latest Agatha Christie Adaptation Failed to Impress

With the BBC often producing Christie adaptations, the latest actually arrived within the past month, with an adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s Towards Zero premiering on BritBox on April 16. However, despite the strong reputation many such adaptations hold, Towards Zero failed to quite capture the magic that is infused with every line of Christie’s original work. Citing an uneven and slow pace and a lack of intrigue and mystery, Collider‘s David Caballero was less-than-impressed in his review of the series. Describing it as “a solid, albeit poorly paced, adaptation of one of Agatha Christie’s most underrated novels,” Caballero concluded, “While not a blazing success, Towards Zero is lush, gorgeously staged, and, once the mystery actually starts, rather compelling. If only it started sooner.”

A brand-new Agatha Christie adaptation is on its way. You can catch the most recent, Towards Zero, on BritBox now.
