‘Night Court’ Cancelled After Three Seasons!!

The NBC jury has reached a verdict, your honor, and it is bad news for Night Court fans. The reboot of the classic Reinhold Weege sitcom was firmly on the bubble for the network after drawing a more modest audience than its first two seasons under Dan Rubin. In the end, Melissa Rauch will not be returning to the bench as Judge Abby Stone for Season 4, as the series has been cancelled per Deadline. The news comes just days after Season 3 served out the final two episodes of its 18-episode sentence with a bombshell reveal that changed everything for Judge Stone.

Night Court kicked off on a white-hot note when it debuted in 2023. According to Nielsen ratings at the time, the reboot had been NBC‘s biggest comedy premiere since 2017, only being surpassed by the reboot of Will & Grace. Since then, the series settled into a groove, bringing zany courtroom antics to television screens on Tuesday nights much like its Harry Anderson-led predecessor, complete with its old Emmy-winning star John Larroquette back in the fold as the cynical prosecutor turned public defender Dan Fielding. The series stars Rauch as the daughter of the late Anderson‘s Judge Harry Stone, who shares her father’s sunny disposition and interest in the people that walk through the courtroom’s doors. Her overworked staff is less enthusiastic about taking time to get to know everyone and administer justice, however.

Doubts about the show’s future began emerging throughout Season 3, as viewership seemed to be on a slow but steady decline. That didn’t quell the optimism from the cast, however. Back in February, Nyambi Nyambi, Gary Anthony Williams, and Lacretta, who play Wyatt, Flobert, and Gurgs, all shared their hopes for Season 4 and their ideas for the series going forward, from exploring their characters’ love lives to meeting their family members and expanding beyond the courtroom. Sadly, that won’t be happening despite Deadline‘s reports of a last-minute push for a shortened Season 4. The only glimmer of hope is that Warner Bros. Television may look to shop the series. The trio of stars, Rauch, and Larroquette were joined by a talented fresh face in the courtroom in Season 3 with the addition of Wendie Malick as Dan’s ex, Julianne, who is now the court’s prosecutor.

‘Night Court’ Has Welcomed a Wealth of Guest Stars Throughout Its Run

While the Night Court staff take center stage, part of what has made the show stand out is its wide range of guest stars playing defendants and other roles around the courtroom. Throughout its three seasons, the series has reunited Rauch with several of her Big Bang Theory colleagues, including Kate Micucci, Kunal Nayyar, Laura Spencer, Mayim Bialik, and, as of the Season 3 finale, her old on-screen romantic partner, Simon Helberg. Three veterans of the original show have also gotten a chance to rub elbows with Larroquette once again, with Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell reprising their roles as the Wheeler family and Marsha Warfield playing the no-nonsense former bailiff Roz Russell. Other big-name guests who have been to the Manhattan court include Richard Kind, Jackie Hoffman, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tara Lipinski, Johnny Weir, Andrew Daly, Jessica St. Clair, Julia Duffy, Pete Holmes, Ryan Hansen, Raegan Revord, and many more.

All episodes of Night Court Season 3 can now be streamed on Peacock.
