The bloodbath at NBC continues with The Irrational next on the chopping block. Per Deadline, the Jesse L. Martin-led crime drama has been cancelled after two seasons on the network following a significant fall-off in ratings from its initial run. After a very strong premiere in Fall 2023 with 12.1 million viewers across all NBC Universal platforms within 15 days and a quick renewal two months later in November, viewers mostly drifted away once the heart of NBC‘s lineup returned following the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. It now joins Night Court and Lopez vs. Lopez among the list of shows on the bubble that didn’t make the cut today.
The Irrational was always going to face an uphill battle, not just because of its dwindling viewership, but because of the harsh realities of being a bubble show at NBC at this moment. Executives have had to make some tough decisions with so many shows teetering on the edge and the network inking a massive $2.4 billion deal to bring the NBA back to its schedule for the first time in 23 years. With 100 regular-season games, the All-Star game, first-round playoff matchups, and more expected to air starting with the 2025-26 season, space has been hard to come by for any series that wasn’t an obvious winner. One ace The Irrational had up its sleeve was Martin‘s history at the network as a beloved Law & Order veteran, but that wasn’t enough to stave off cancellation.
Martin took up the role of Alec Mercer in the series, a world-famous professor of behavioral science who brought his unconventional approach and understanding of human behavior to the field of crime-solving to crack mysteries related to law enforcement, corporations, and governments. Complete with a team that included his research assistants, his sister, and his FBI agent ex-wife, he gets the answers he needs with science, with his intense curiosity about human behavior driving him forward. Based on the novel Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely, the show explored both Mercer’s unnatural ability to crack the cases that baffled traditional investigators and his mysterious past. Maahra Hill, Travina Springer, Molly Kunz, and Arash DeMaxi all starred alongside Martin.
Where Would ‘The Irrational’ Have Gone in Season 3?
Season 2 of The Irrational came to an end back in March with a multi-country finale that showrunner Arika Lisanne Mittman described as “bigger in scope than anything we’ve ever done.” It also left the series on a major cliffhanger, with Alec learning someone was stalking him after receiving a series of disturbing texts with photos of him. Rose, his girlfriend, played by Karen David, was poised to take on an even greater role and add a new layer to their relationship after opening up her own agency and taking him on as her first client. The new mystery directly haunting the professor would’ve taken the show to dangerous new heights according to Mittman, who told TV Insider that the goal of the finale was to “tease something about, ‘Hey, next season there’s going to be more intriguing mysteries, more to uncover, this doesn’t mean the story’s over.’” Moreover, she added that Rose’s expanded role would’ve meant new opportunities for Alec to take on a wider range of cases that he hasn’t had the opportunity for in Season 3.
All episodes of The Irrational are available to stream on Peacock.
