It’s been almost exactly two years since HBO Max rebranded to Max, a decision that baffled many due to it giving up much of its branding identity. Fans had mostly become accustomed to the new name after all this time, but now the studio has announced that the name will be changed back. That’s right, what’s now Max will return to the name HBO Max this summer. It’s yet to be announced exactly when this change will be made, but it will be sometime in the next few months. Max CEO Casey Bloys said they believe the name HBO Max “better represents” what the brand is about — if only someone had thought of that name first. President and CEO of streaming JB Perrette also said during the same presentation at WBD Upfront that the platform’s programming “just hits different.”
Unlike when HBO Max shifted to Max, this change will not require users to download a new app. The Max app will simply be updated to be HBO Max. This not-so-new name allows Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service to embrace many of its flagship shows that come from the HBO banner, like The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and more. It was always clear what HBO Max was, and while perhaps not the most unique name, it still closely represented a streaming service much more than just Max, which is the name of thousands of people on the planet. Still, as silly and, to be quite frank, embarrassing as this move is, it undoes a change that hardly anyone asked for in the first place. We can only hope it will stick this time.
When Will ‘Sinners’ Be on HBO Max?
Warner Bros. biggest movie of the year thus far has been Sinners, the vampire horror film from director Ryan Coogler. The studio has yet to announce when Sinners will begin streaming, but the platform will likely have gone through with its name change by the time it does. Sinners, which also stars Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, has already been in theaters for more than a month, and it will likely begin its run on VOD platforms soon. Given how successful the movie has been at the box office, it will likely be well into the summer before it makes its streaming debut.
Max will officially change its name back to HBO Max this summer.
