
The Gears of War movie may have found its director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, veteran action movie filmmaker David Leitch is in negotiations to take on the highly-anticipated adaptation, with Netflix producing the film for their streaming catalog. After many months of searching for a filmmaker capable of bringing this story to life, Netflix is ready to move forward with their Gears of War project thanks to the artist behind The Fall Guy. Jon Spaihts is currently working on the script for the adaptation. The writer has been hard at work with Denis Villeneuve thanks to the Dune franchise — the Frank Herbert adaptations that have taken over the box office in recent years.
Gears of War is one of the biggest video game franchises in history. The titles were produced for multiple Xbox consoles, with a recent development allowing PlayStation users to dive deep into this story. After A Minecraft Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s became hits at the global box office, it’s easy to understand why Netflix is looking forward to making the gears turn with their development of Gears of War. Almost three years have passed since the streaming platform acquired the rights to bring the video games to life on the screen.
Gears of War takes place in a desolate world where dangerous creatures known as Locust emerge from the depths of the Earth. Players are given the opportunity to become a part of the Delta Squad — humanity’s last hope led by the unpredictable Marcus Fenix. Five main titles have been produced for the Gears of War video game series, with a couple of spin-offs entertaining players while the studio works on the next installment. It’s evident that the release of projects like the Super Mario Bros. Movie changed the landscape for video game adaptations in the entertainment industry following its monumental success at the box office.
David Leitch’s Previous Work
Netflix recruited David Leitch for their upcoming Gears of War adaptation thanks to the filmmaker’s trained eye for complex action sequences. The director’s filmmaking career began as a co-director on the original John Wick alongside Chad Stahelski before taking over directing duties for Ryan Reynolds‘s Deadpool 2. was recently praised thanks to his work on The Fall Guy, a blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt that followed a stuntman who finds himself stuck in a criminal scheme. Before that, Leitch worked on the development of both Bullet Train and Hobbs & Shaw. Gears of War has the potential to become a major franchise for Netflix. The studio is looking for a new blockbuster property, with Stranger Things and Squid Game coming to an end later this year.
