‘Top Gun 3’: Tom Cruise Provides New Promising Update!!

It’s been about three years since the last Top Gun movie launched nationwide to tremendous success, and naturally, fans have been eagerly anticipating another installment since then. Back in February, a Maverick star shared a fantastic update about a third movie, hinting at discussions going on behind closed doors. And not long ago, lead star Tom Cruise, who most recently has been busy with the latest Mission: Impossible movie, offered even more promising information about Top Gun 3.

As reported by ComicBook, during an interview with the Australian show Today, where the iconic performer promoted Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, he was asked whether Top Gun 3 was “on the horizon”. He confirmed that the film is indeed in the works, with active conversations still ongoing. Cruise also spoke of the highly anticipated sequel to the 1990 sports drama Days of Thunder, which is also in discussion. In his words:

Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”

The award-winning actor further mentioned other projects he has been working on, including one with The Revenant’s Alejandro Iñárritu and several with Top Gun: Maverick’s writer and producer Christopher McQuarrie.

There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, that was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”

Tom Cruise Wants The Audience to “Get What They Paid For” with ‘Top Gun 3’

Speaking of the exciting Top Gun 3 update shared in February, Jay Ellis, who played Lt. Reuben ‘Payback’ Fitch in the second film, had a chat with Us Weekly, revealing that the team was “still working on the script.” Ellis added that they wanted to get the story right, especially Cruise, whose primary goal is the audience’s entertainment. The Running Point actor said:

Tom is a stickler, and that really comes from him wanting to make sure the audience gets what they paid for and that they’re entertained, that for those two hours, they can fully disappear in this theater, and the world around them doesn’t exist anymore.”

Top Gun 3 is expected to be a direct sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, which premiered at CinemaCon on April 28, 2022, and hit U.S. theaters later in May. The film was a huge success among fans, critics, and even at the box office, where it earned over a billion dollars, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2022 and the highest-grossing film of Cruise‘s career.

The next Top Gun movie remains a work in progress.
