‘Practical Magic 2’: Joey King in Talks to Join Anticipated Sequel!!

Joey King is about to cast a spell on Practical Magic fans. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Kissing Booth star is in discussions to join Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in the highly anticipated sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy classic directed by Susanne Bier. Her addition will expand the Owens family and bring a bit of chaos for the witches, as she’s set to play one of Gilly’s (Kidman) daughters who discovers her family’s dark secrets and the powers she possesses. She’ll threaten to “plunge the family into a crisis” in late summer, when filming gets underway in London.

Where the original Practical Magic centered on the witchy sisters Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens as they grappled with the family curse that doomed every man they fell in love with, and fought the supernatural forces that threatened to undo their bloodline, Practical Magic 2 is meant to be a faithful adaptation of the fourth novel in Alice Hoffman‘s series, The Book of Magic. The book takes place over a decade later, with the next generation of Owenses now facing the same curse. Three generations of the family take action to save a young man whose life hangs in the balance, traveling around the world to explore the origins of their gifts. At its heart, it’s a story that centers on the relationships between mothers and daughters, and the feeling of being in love as the younger Owens children are made aware of the realities of magic and romance their family faces.

To keep the film in line with the original, Akiva Goldsman once again penned the screenplay, from which Bier will direct. Bier has a lot of experience working with the two leads of Practical Magic 2, previously helming Bullock‘s Birdbox and directing in Kidman‘s series The Perfect Couple. This will, however, be her first time working with King, who, coincidentally, just played Kidman’s daughter in Netflix‘s romantic-comedy A Family Affair last year. Given that past on-screen relationship, King should fit right into the fun and witchy” sequel, which will be a very different kind of collaboration from Bier’s prior work.

Joey King Has Kept Busy in the Run Up to ‘Practical Magic’

In the run-up to joining the witchy world of Practical Magic, King has established herself as one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars in a variety of roles. The trilogy of The Kissing Booth films paved the way for high-profile roles, from an excellent turn as Gypsy-Rose Blanchard in The Act, to David Leitch‘s Brad Pitt actioner Bullet Train to the Hulu historical miniseries We Were the Lucky Ones, following a Jewish family fighting to survive and return to each other following the horrors of World War II. She’s also shown off her voice-acting on the big screen in last year’s Despicable Me 4, where she played young supervillain in the making Poppy Prescott. Most recently, King led the cast of McG‘s dystopian sci-fi teen flick Uglies.

Practical Magic 2 is currently set for theaters on September 18, 2026.
