‘Anyone But You 2’: Sydney Sweeney Provides Cryptic Update!!

It’s been over two years since Anyone But You quietly debuted in theatres and then slowly climbed the charts to become one of the biggest sleeper rom-com hits in recent memory. Since then, the film has only grown more beloved, thanks to streaming, fan edits, the magic of TikTok and the undeniable chemistry between stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. So, naturally, the big question remains: Will there be a sequel? In a recent career-spanning interview with Empire, Sweeney was asked the very question fans have been dying to know. And while her response didn’t give us a definitive answer, it did spark hope.

(Laughs) Ummmmm! You’ll just have to wait and see. It’s not a no, and it’s not a yes. It’s a, ‘I don’t have an answer that I can say for you’.

So… that’s not a no. But it’s definitely not a yes, either. Still, the fact that she’s being this coy suggests that something may be cooking.

What Would ‘Anyone But You 2’ Be About?

While Anyone But You didn’t exactly wow critics out of the gate, audiences had a very different response, and my goodness this film had legs when it came to the box office. In fact, it’s now widely regarded as one of the strongest modern rom-coms of the last decade, with some even calling it “the best modern rom-com ever.” That praise seems to have reached Sweeney too: “I was making a movie for audiences,” she told Empire. “And the audience spoke.”

That audience response has ignited calls for a follow-up—and not just from fans. Powell himself told Variety last year that he and Sweeney were already “trying to find the next thing,” adding, “Send us all the scripts you got.”

If a sequel does happen, fans already have ideas about where it could go. The original, loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, followed enemies-turned-lovers Bea and Ben, and it would make sense for the sequel to centre on another wedding—perhaps even their own. A new location, more hijinks, and another chance for Sweeney and Powell to spar their way into love again? Count us in. Paris-set nonsense with a title of Anyone But Deux? Sold.

While there’s still no official greenlight from Sony or the team behind the film, the door is clearly wide open. And Sweeney’s refusal to shut it—even with a simple no—might be the most hopeful news yet. For now, you can catch the original on Netflix.
