Having released A Minecraft Movie on PVOD platforms after holding off on the decision for an unusually long period of time, even Warner Bros. seems to have resigned to the possibility that the movie will not pass the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office. A Minecraft Movie delivered a record debut some weeks ago, and served as a much-needed rebound for the struggling studio; its performance since then has been nothing short of extraordinary. But with less than $950 million worldwide and fresh competition in the form of Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the movie is on its last legs.
A Minecraft Movie lost over 1,300 domestic theaters this week, mostly to make room for the new releases, but also because it’s now available to watch at home. The movie has made a total of $420 million domestically and around $520 million from overseas markets, for a combined global haul of almost $940 million. This puts it ahead of Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest at the domestic box office, and ahead of Pixar’s Finding Nemo globally. Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie is now among the 70 highest-grossing movies in global box office history, and among the 10 biggest hits distributed by W.B.
Directed by Jared Hess, it’s also among the highest-grossing hits of stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black’s careers. Both actors have billion-dollar hits under their belts already, in the form of the first Aquaman and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Speaking of which, A Minecraft Movie is going to have to settle for the number two spot on the list of the highest-grossing video game adaptations, behind Super Mario Bros., which made around $575 million domestically and over $1.3 billion worldwide a few years ago. Like that film, A Minecraft Movie opened to mixed critical reviews but received the audience’s embrace.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Was a Hit with Audiences
The movie holds a “rotten” 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but its audience score on the aggregator website stands at 86%. During the initial few days of its release, videos of packed houses having a blast in cinemas across the country were shared on social media, no doubt adding to the buzz around the film. Hess himself reacted to it, while Black made a trip to a theater and asked the crowds not to make things difficult for the staff.
A Minecraft Movie is available to watch at home, and a sequel has been hinted at.
