Director Guy Ritchie has delivered on several projects over the years, and the latest one is the new adventure movie, Fountain of Youth. The new Apple TV+ film is a globe-trotting adventure which follows treasure hunter Luke (John Krasinski) and his team, which includes his estranged sister Charlotte (Natalie Portman) and protector Esme (Eiza González), as they embark on a journey to find the famed Fountain of Youth. Mediocre reviews have trailed the premiere of Fountain of Youth since it arrived this past Friday. However, the adventure film has been able to unseat Apple‘s long-reigning champion, The Gorge, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, from the top of the viewership charts. So, what are the chances of Ritchie, González, and Portman returning for a sequel?
This is a question director Ritchie and the Fountain of Youth cast have had to front up to. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, González, who plays Esme in the life-changing adventure, shared her thoughts on the film’s ending, hinting at lingering feelings between Esme and Luke as the pair enjoyed a playful exchange throughout. “It has very layered meanings in it,” González says. “It’s a perfect cliffhanger for the end of their relationship. What is she really trying to say here? Is it a relationship? Is it protectors? What’s next?”
Co-star Portman did share some enthusiasm regarding making more, saying, “If people wanted to see more, I would definitely be up for making more. It was so joyful to make this.” González joins in, adding:
“Why wouldn’t I? What a dream to be traveling the world with this amazing cast again. I do think that these types of movies need to be continued to be made for kids, to keep the innocence going, the passion of curiosity. You keep a family legacy. So, I’d jump right in.”
Guy Ritchie Knows Which Artifacts To Seek Out Next in ‘Fountain of Youth 2’
The Fountain of Youth screenplay is written by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include horror and adventure stories like Scream VI and Zodiac, but also Murder Mystery 2 and Independence Day: Resurgence. The work between Vanderbilt and Ritchie introduced audiences to the “protectors,” the mysterious organization that Esme is part of. González goes on to express an interest in further exploring the lore of that organization, which seemed to be led by Stanley Tucci‘s Elder character, saying:
“I asked Guy, Are there other protectors? And he’s like, ‘Of course there has to be.’ Given that, it could be fun to have another sequel. We did go to one of the seven wonders of the world. There could be more. That’s the fun thing about adventure movies; it could keep going and going and going.”
One of the iconic scenes in The Fountain of Youth was set among the pyramids of Giza, as the film took audiences to unique locations and sets. Director Ritchie has no shortage of ideas for other artifacts that Luke and the group could pursue, though those details are being kept under wraps for now:
“It was the most pleasurable film to make. It was one of those films that you don’t really want to end. People had such a lovely time doing it that they’d love to go back for another bite. So, we’ll have to see how we do. We’d all love to go back.”
