‘Dodgeball 2’: Vince Vaughn Shares Update on the Long-Awaited Sequel!!

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story remains one of the most memorable films of Vince Vaughn‘s career. Released in 2004, the sports comedy became a surprise box office hit, earning over $160 million on a modest $20 million budget, beating out strong box office competition. The critics loved it as much as the audience, as it scored a solid 71% Rotten Tomatoes rating. With numbers like that, a sequel seemed inevitable, but despite the demand, a follow-up never materialized. However, plans to rectify that went into motion in 2023 when a sequel was announced with Vaughn on board. Since then, though, there haven’t been any concrete updates, leaving fans to wonder about the project’s fate. Now, Vaughn has finally shared a small but welcome update.

Vaughn has since continued to thrive in Hollywood, with his latest film, Nonnas, a heartfelt ode to the Italian-American experience, currently dominating Netflix’s charts. The comedy actor has a packed slate of upcoming projects, but in his latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed he could still make time for another round of dodgeball. When asked about the sequel’s status, he revealed that some progress has been made on the script and that there’s a good idea in place. However, he suggested that the script still needed some fine-tuning to get things ready for the next phase. He said:

There’s always talk of these. Dodgeball, actually, there’s an idea that’s pretty good, but nothing for sure. I’m going to start the second season of Bad Monkey, which is great, and then I have another thing I’m going to do, but I would definitely … It’s always about if the story’s right, if the extension is something that makes sense. There are ideas that are good with some of these, but you never know what transpires and if it makes sense for everybody. But I’m definitely open to it. I love a lot of those movies and definitely open if something comes to pass.”

What Do We Know About the ‘Dodgeball’ Sequel?

The Dodgeball sequel is in development at 20th Century Studios. The script is being written by Jordan VanDina, who received the baton from Rawson Marshall Thurber, the writer and director of the original movie. While progress on the script may seem slow, the project is in good hands with VanDina coming aboard with a solid track record of crafting entertaining stories. He has lent his creative prowess to such shows as Hulu’s Animaniacs and SuperMansion Season 3. Although a director has yet to be announced, VanDina could potentially take the helm as directing counts among his areas of competence.

The Dodgeball sequel won’t be Vaughn and VanDina‘s first collaboration, as they previously worked together on the 2020 parody film The Binge. As of now, Vince Vaughn is the only confirmed cast member, and it remains to be seen whether original co-stars like Ben Stiller will return.
