The creator and executive producers of the streaming hit Money Heist are back with another grand drama, Billionaires’ Bunker. The series is expected to hit Netflix globally this fall, and in anticipation, the platform has unveiled a sneak peek, hinting at what’s coming. Created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, Billionaires’ Bunker stars Miren Ibarguren, Joaquín Furriel, Natalia Verbeke, Carlos Santos, Montse Guallar, Pau Simón, Alicia Falcó, Agustina Bisio, and Álex Villazán, among others.
As the title implies, Billionaires’ Bunker sees a group of billionaires take refuge in a luxury bunker designed to endure any imaginable catastrophe as World War III is about to break out, per the official synopsis. These people are forced to coexist after locking themselves in, and through screens, they’ll watch the bewildering spectacle of the world they knew collapsing above their heads. The logline continues:
“As the situation outside becomes increasingly terrifying, they’ll enjoy an underground city with a basketball court, restaurant, Zen garden, cocktail bar, psychologist’s couch, gym and spa. Their ancient privilege will be reduced to a life adapted to a luxurious hole, an underground universe full of enigmas where a wound from the past will explode between two conflicting families.”
Based on the teaser, this wound from the past marks two families, and secrets soon threaten to be spilled. There’s no possibility of escape for all parties, so will they all be able to survive together? Find out when the show premieres on September 19 and check out the clip below.
Netflix Successfully Revamped ‘Money Heist’
It’s been nearly four years since Money Heist ended after four seasons on both the Spanish network Antena 3 and Netflix. The heist thriller originally ran on Antena 3 from May 2 through November 23, 2017, with fifteen episodes. Netflix acquired it that same year and revamped it as twenty-two shorter episodes, releasing them globally between December 20, 2017, for Part 1 and April 6, 2018, for Part 2. After multiple renewals over the years, the series eventually wrapped up on December 3, 2021, with Part 5.
Pina created Money Heist, which centered on two heists led by the infamous Professor (Álvaro Morte) – one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and one on the Bank of Spain – told from the perspective of one of the robbers, Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó). Other stars featured in the drama were Itziar Ituño, Pedro Alonso, Paco Tous, Alba Flores, Miguel Herrán, Jaime Lorente, Rodrigo de la Serna, and Najwa Nimri. In addition to creating, Pina also served as executive producer alongside Lobato, Sonia Martínez, Jesús Colmenar, and Nacho Manubens.
Money Heist is streaming on Netflix, while Pina’s next series arrives in September.
