‘Divine Rivals’: Popular YA Novel Adaptation Being Penned By ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ Writer!!

Paramount Pictures has pulled out ahead of the competition and now has a book-to-screen adaptation on the way. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the company has acquired the rights to Rebecca Ross’ fantasy romance novel, Divine Rivals. Should the title perform well, there’s plenty more where that came from, as the book is the first in the author’s beloved Letters of Enchantment series. As with most popular things in 2025, Divine Rivals enjoyed a catapult to the top of pop-culture thanks to BookTok, where readers spread the word and helped generate extra eyes on the title.

In addition to the backing of the major studio, the project also has an incredible grouping of names working behind the scenes to ensure it enjoys a seamless transition from page to screen. Sofia Alvarez has signed on to write the script, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing under his first-look deal. Already well-versed in the adaptation game, the former is perhaps best known as the scribe behind Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, while the latter holds credits as a producer behind such favorites as the Transformers franchise, Constantine, The Meg film series, and so many more. Finally, Pouya Shahbazian, yet another name connected to the book-to-film world thanks to his involvement behind the Divergent films, is also on-board to produce.

In Divine Rivals, audiences are transported to a war-torn world where the gods themselves are at odds with one another. Humanity is caught in the crosshairs and two rival journalists, Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt, unknowingly begin to develop a romantic relationship when a string of enchanted letters passes between them. Think something along the lines of You’ve Got Mail but in a fantastical world.

On-Screen Productions Based on Books — Hollywood’s Moneymaker

When sequels, threequels, reboots, and reimaginings fail, turn to books — or at least that’s what it’s felt like in Hollywood as of late. This year alone, favorites like Dog Man, Forever, Bridget Jones: Mad About a Boy, and The Residence have already been released, while the future holds adaptations of the Sydney Sweeney starrer, The Housemaid, Glen Powell’s turn in The Running Man, the Natalie Portman-led The Woman in Cabin 10, and so many more. If there’s one thing that people love, it’s watching and then picking apart a story they spent hours reading, allowing them to decide if the on-screen makeover was necessary. When it hits, it hits, and when it doesn’t, it proves to be a massive money pit for all involved.

No release date has been set for Divine Rivals, but stay tuned to Collider for more information.
