Mads Mikkelsen is back in the tux — or, more accurately, seated behind a high-stakes poker table with a suspicious eye and a bleeding tear duct. The iconic Bond villain from Casino Royale has officially returned to the role of Le Chiffre, but not in a new Bond film. Instead, he’s showing up where no Bond villain has gone before: as an Elusive Target in Hitman: World of Assassination.
Announced during Summer Game Fest 2025, Mikkelsen’s Le Chiffre has been reborn as “The Banker” — a high value assassination target who will be skulking around a casino-themed version of the Paris map from Hitman (2016). This is a nice treat for both Bond fans and Hitman aficionados, as IO Interactive — the developers behind the iconic Hitman series and the new 007 origin game First Light — announced this as a total surprise.
Will ‘Hitman’ Feature THAT ‘Casino Royale’ Scene?
Fans of Casino Royale will no doubt remember Le Chiffre for several reasons: the bleeding eye, the soft-spoken menace, and of course, that one scene that will forever haunt anyone with a Y chromosome. Yes, the infamous “chair with no seat” interrogation — the moment James Bond’s grit (and other things) were tested — instantly elevated Le Chiffre to iconic villain status.
While no such testicular trauma is promised in this Hitman appearance (sorry to the masochists), the spiritual tension of that moment lives on. In this take on the story, Mikkelsen’s character isn’t torturing Bond — he is the one being hunted. And rather than wielding a knotted rope, he’ll be dodging Agent 47’s Silverballers and avoiding an “accidental” drowning in a poker-chip fountain. Mikkelsen took to the stage to a rapturous reception, where he spoke of his delight at returning to the role.
“This is a role, I’ve had a lot of love for this character, it means a lot to me. So when I got the chance to step into the shoes of Le Chiffre again, I didn’t hesitate. But this time is a little different. He’s more confident, he’s dangerous, he’s not just a brilliant mind hiding behind a desk. He’s visceral, unpredictable and ruthless, and this time, he doesn’t outsource the violence any more.”
The Le Chiffre mission in Hitman launches today, and will run until July 6.
