Original shows have a hard time of making it work in the modern world and we lost one of the better ones. Prime Video‘s Étoile was canceled after just one season. Deadline reported that the Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino series was canceled despite having a two-season order. According to the report, it was due to the show’s performance vs. cost report and not a change of who is in charge of Amazon MGM Studios. Jennifer Salke had been the one to give the series a two season order and she left her position in March.
The cancellation is devastating for fans of the series. The Season 1 finale left fans with an open-ended question about Jack (Luke Kirby) and Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge) that was, seemingly, going to be answered in the next season. But it was reported that part of the reason for the show’s cancellation came down to how expensive the show was to make. Not only did Étoile have some of the best dancers in the world on their payroll, they also filmed in some of the most iconic buildings in both New York City and in Paris. Neither place are cheap to film in.
The series was also dropped on Prime Video as a binge-watch. Typically, the platform does weekly releases and it then, in turn, had Étoile fading from the top slot on their platform quite quickly. So it did not perform as they hoped it would, maybe because they set it up to be a binge watch and that’s it. It is the second series that Sherman-Palladino and Palladino had for Prime Video following the success of their show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which also had Kirby and Gideon Glick in it.
It’s A Sad Time For Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Ballet Fans
Sherman-Palladino has brought her ballet past into the fold before with her ABC Family series Bunheads. The short-lived series had 18 episodes but was enough for fans to fall in love with Sutton Foster in the ballet series. With the cancellation of Étoile, it marks the second ballet-themed series from Sherman-Palladino to be canceled within one season. And the cancellation of Étoile is doubly annoying given the fact that the series was originally greenlit for a second season by the streaming platform.
For now, you can share your sorrows with other fans of Étoile by rewatching the series on Prime Video.
