With the Avengers: Doomsday clock ticking ever closer to the dawn of the MCU‘s Phase 6, excitement is building for what promises to be the most impressive line-up of MCU alumni in the franchise’s history. From the return of Robert Downey Jr. as the dastardly Doctor Doom, to returning favorites like Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor and Paul Rudd‘s Ant-Man, and Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova hopefully getting a greater spotlight following the success of Thunderbolts*, Doomsday promises a bit of everything for fans of the franchise.
However, given the sheer size of the MCU, some names have unfortunately missed out. This includes the entire Guardians of the Galaxy crew, with their involvement in 2019’s historic Avengers: Endgame a welcome addition to a stacked cast that seemingly won’t rematerialize. Speaking on her lack of involvement in the upcoming era of the MCU, Karen Gillan noted her disappointment, although she did offer a promise of hope for a future reprisal of Nebula. Speaking to MovieWeb, Gillain said:
“It’s so much fun working in the Marvel world… in terms of the future, can’t say anything. You know how it goes, but maybe… never say, never.”
When Is ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Being Released?
After originally being scheduled to set in motion the MCU‘s Phase 6 in May 2026, Avengers: Doomsday was the recipient of a push-back from Disney, as the wait for the return of Earth’s mightiest heroes goes on. Now scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, Doomsday becomes the latest in a long line of delayed projects, although many are suggesting this delay is a smart decision that could eventually benefit Marvel in the long run. However, one tricky hill to climb is that, now rescheduled for December 18, Doomsday will have to do battle with several other major box office releases.
First, Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Messiah is set to release on the exact same weekend, making for a mouth-watering box office promise for fans of both franchises, but this also has the potential to split theatergoers and harm the overall opening weekend figures for both. As well as this, DreamWorks‘ long-awaited Shrek 5 is scheduled for release just a week after, leaving a trio of potential billion-dollar hits competing for viewers’ attention at the same time. Elsewhere in the month, Jumanji 3 is prepping for a December 11 release, Ice Age 6 is also releasing on the same weekend as Doomsday and Messiah, and Robert Eggers’ Werwulf has the unenviable task of battling a smorgasbord of franchise giants when it debuts on December 25.
