‘Icebreaker’: Netflix Officially Announces Hockey Romance Series Adaptation!!

Hockey romances Heated Rivalry and Off Campus have been streaming mega-hits, proving that there’s a strong demand for the intersection of body checks and steamy sex, both on the page and the screen. Now, there’s a third series in the works from another streaming giant to make it a hat trick. Netflix is working on a new adaptation of another BookTok sports romance sensation.

Netflix has announced that they’re adapting Hannah Grace‘s hit hockey romance novel Icebreaker. The series will be showrun by Amanda Lasher, who began her Hollywood career as James Mangold‘s assistant on Cop Land, and has gone on to write and produce series like Gossip Girl, Riverdale, and With Love. Says Lasher, “I have been a fan of steamy YA since the 7th grade; reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a text book.” She’ll also co-write the series with Jade Bartlett, who recently wrote and directed the Jenna Ortega erotic thriller Miller’s Girl. Bartlett praised Icebreaker for being “a story filled with ambitious, talented, and undeniably sexy characters. But the real special sauce is that, above all, they are good, deeply compassionate people…and we cannot get enough of them.

What Is ‘Icebreaker’ About?

Anastasia Allen is a figure skater who’s recently transferred to the University of California, Maple Hills. Nate Hawkins is the Maple Hills’ biggest hockey star, and he’s looking to make it to the National Hockey League. Their lives collide when an accident forces the hockey team and the figure skating team to share a practice rink; and, as anyone who’s seen the D.B. SweeneyMoira Kelly classic The Cutting Edge can predict, when these two meet, sparks are going to fly. Grace‘s novel spent 70 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and has been translated into 24 languages; it was also followed by two subsequent books in the Maple Hills series, Wildfire and Daydream, which follow the romantic travails of other Maple Hills students. Undoubtedly, Netflix is looking to adapt those sequels if Icebreaker proves to be a hit.

Icebreaker is a production of Unwell Productions, and will be executive produced by Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Meena Lefevre. Lasher and Bartlett will also executive produce. It was announced by Netflix at the Banff World Media Festival earlier today.

Icebreaker is in development at Netflix; no release date has yet been announced.
