Peter Safran confirms when DCU’s Gorilla Grodd series begins filming
A new update from DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has shed light on the status of the long-rumored Gorilla Grodd television project. During a recent interview discussing future DCU productions, Safran revealed that the series is expected to begin filming later this year. “We’ve talked about the Gorilla Grodd show for HBO that we’ll start shooting this year,” he said.
After the interviewer reacted with surprise, Safran quickly acknowledged the significance of the revelation, adding, “That’s big news, by the way. I probably shouldn’t have said that.” The comment offers the first concrete production update of the project. If filming proceeds on schedule, the series could potentially debut on HBO Max in 2027 or early 2028.
Starring Jimmy Olsen, the project has been the subject of speculation for some time. Earlier reports suggested that the Gorilla Grodd series could be titled American Villain, although DC Studios has not officially confirmed the title. According to those reports, the series would follow Olsen and a team of Daily Planet reporters as they investigate strange supervillain-related incidents.
The project is also reportedly being developed by American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault. Meanwhile, earlier reports indicated that Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and David Corenswet’s Clark Kent would not be part of the series, allowing the story to remain focused on Jimmy and the Daily Planet newsroom.
For now, many details surrounding the project remain unconfirmed. However, Safran’s revelation that filming is expected to begin this year suggests that the long-discussed series is finally moving forward.
