It looks like we didn’t need to worry too much over that 2-year cliffhanger from Season 2, as the entire Enterprise crew is all smiles in the latest trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The hit prequel series is set to return after a lengthy hiatus later this summer, picking up where Season 2 left off with Captain Pike on the edge of Federation space with half his crew held captive in enemy territory. It appears that all will be resolved when the series returns as each member of the crew — even those who were held hostage or even infected like Pike’s (Anson Mount) girlfriend Batel (Melanie Scrofano) — are setting off on new adventures in the new trailer.
While the new footage certainly features its fair share of action, it primarily emphasizes the lighter, more hopeful aspects of the series with an opening voiceover from Rebecca Romijn‘s Number One, promising to bring “light, warmth, and life” wherever the Enterprise goes. Season 3 promises new adventures, new planets, and even new romances. The footage also reveals that Martin Quinn‘s role as Scotty has been expanded beyond a cameo as he keeps up with Carol Kane‘s wisecracking Pelia. We may also finally get more of Ortegas’ (Melissa Navia) backstory as her brother arrives on the ship and seemingly starts up a flirtation with Uhura (Celia Gooding).
Paul Wesley‘s Kirk also returns in the new footage, with Pike giving the young captain some wise words of advice as he prepares to take the chair for himself. Meanwhile, Spock (Ethan Peck) appears to continue leaning into his human side, cracking jokes throughout the trailer.
What’s Next for the Star Trek Universe?
While many Star Trek shows have gone off the air in recent years, with Discovery, Picard, Prodigy, and Lower Decks all taking their final bow on Paramount+, the franchise still has a handful of offerings to look forward to. Beyond the new season of Strange New Worlds, which has already been greenlit for a fourth season as well, the franchise is set to travel far into the future with the Discovery spin-off Starfleet Academy. The franchise’s first YA-led offering wrapped filming earlier this year and has yet to set a release date. It does, however, already feature a stacked cast that includes Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, Tatiana Maslany, and Becky Lynch, alongside several rising stars and returning Discovery alums like Tig Notaro and Mary Wiseman.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return with two episodes on Thursday, July 17.
