The cast of Spaceballs 2 continues to round out. With Bill Pullman set to return as galactic rogue Lone Starr, his son, Thunderbolts* standout Lewis Pullman, is in talks to join him. The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Pullman will play Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Queen Vespa (Daphne Zuniga); Zuniga, who starred in the 1987 original, is also set to return. The film is slated for a 2027 theatrical release by Amazon MGM Studios.
The comedy sequel has been assembling its surviving cast members all day: in addition to Pullman and Zuniga, the film has also recruited Mel Brooks, who directed and wrote the original, as the alien sage Yogurt, and Rick Moranis, who portrayed the villainous Dark Helmet. The film will star Josh Gad, who is co-writing the film, in an unspecified role, and Keke Palmer, who starred in the comedy hit One of Them Days earlier this year, as a character named Destiny. The sequel’s plot and title have yet to be revealed, although Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money was teased in the original film. Spaceballs was a scattershot science fiction spoof that was primarily aimed at Star Wars, although one of its more memorable sequences featured John Hurt parodying his Alien role as a diner customer playing host to a dancing parasite.
Who Is Lewis Pullman?
Pullman made his feature debut alongside his father in the 2017 Western The Ballad of Lefty Brown. After starring in the films The Strangers: Prey at Night and Bad Times at the El Royale, and the TV series Catch-22 and Outer Range, he broke out as Robert “Bob” Floyd in the megahit Top Gun: Maverick. He has subsequently starred in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, Riff Raff, and Salem’s Lot. This summer, he entered the MCU as Bob Reynolds, alias the Sentry, in Thunderbolts*; he’ll reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday next year. Later this year, he’ll star in the musical historical drama Ann Lee, with Amanda Seyfried. He is also slated to star in Remarkably Bright Creatures and Thelma; in the latter, he will play John Kennedy Toole, the author of A Confederacy of Dunces.
Spaceballs 2 will be directed by Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar‘s Josh Greenbaum. Gad will write the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, the screenwriters of Detective Pikachu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. It will be produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks, and Greenbaum; Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez will executive produce.
Spaceballs 2 will be released in 2027; no precise release date has yet been revealed.
