‘Highlander’: Chad Stahelski’s Reboot Starring Henry Cavill Finally Sets Filming Dates!!

There can be only one—and now we finally know when he’ll arrive. Collider has learned exclusively from sources that Highlander will begin production in Scotland in late September to early October, marking a major step forward for one of the most anticipated fantasy reboots in recent memory. The reimagining of the classic fantasy story, directed by John Wick mastermind Chad Stahelski and starring Henry Cavill, has been in development for years, but cameras are finally set to roll this fall.

That’s huge news for fans of the original 1986 cult classic, which followed Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish warrior battling others like him across centuries for the ultimate “Prize.” With its sword fights, time-jumping mythos, and iconic Queen soundtrack, Highlander has lived in pop culture infamy for decades—despite its many failed sequels and spin-offs.

The former Witcher and Man of Steel star was Stahelski’s top choice for MacLeod, not just because of his fantasy pedigree and swordplay skills, but for the emotional range required to play someone who’s lived for centuries. That’s not to say it will necessarily be period John Wick with swords.

My selling point to [Henry] was, look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc… and you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”

What Will ‘Highlander’ Be About?

While plot details are mostly under wraps, it’s clear that Stahelski sees a chance to expand the mythology into something much bigger, and grander. And that’s where Cavill comes in. Stahelski‘s reboot, however, isn’t a strict retelling. “We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes, he previously told Collider. “There’s big opportunity for action… and it’s a bit of a love story — but not how you think.”

The Highlander reboot is expected to be Cavill’s next major franchise after stepping away from The Witcher. For Stahelski, it’s a passion project nearly a decade in the making—and given his track record with John Wick, it’s hard not to get excited about what’s in store. Earlier this year, it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios would be taking on Highlander after the project departed Lionsgate, Stahelski‘s longtime studio home. Cavill is also currently working on another long-gestating project with Amazon: a franchise-spawning Warhammer universe.
