The beloved Spider-Man: The Animated Series is coming back, in a way. Even if no new episodes of the acclaimed production have been announced by Marvel Television, fans of the story will finally get closure thanks to an upcoming limited comic book series. Spider-Man ’94 will conclude the cliffhanger that was established in the final episode of the animated series. Mary Jane Watson (Saratoga Ballantine), Peter Parker’s (Christopher Daniel Barnes) girlfriend, was trapped and far away from her favorite hero.
Spider-Man ’94 will feature Spider-Man saving Mary Jane Watson from what promises to be a horrible fate. The limited comic book series will be written by J. M. DeMatteis, who previously worked with the character in the main Amazing Spider-Man book. The illustrations for the upcoming project will be created by Jim Towe. Marvel Comics made sure to recruit a veteran such as DeMatteis to tackle a narrative audiences have been waiting for over the course of decades.
Marvel Comics has also teased that two major villains from Spider-Man’s roster will appear in Spider-Man ’94. The animated series allowed characters such as The Lizard (Joseph Campanella) and the Green Goblin (Neil Ross) to terrorize the resourceful hero on television. Who will be the new threats that take Spider-Man to the limit in Spider-Man ’94? Audiences will find out for themselves on September 3, when the limited comic book series becomes available for purchase.
What’s Next for Marvel Animation?
Spider-Man: The Animated Series won’t be coming back for now, but Marvel Animation is hard at work with the future of its comic book characters on the small screen. Earlier this year, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man allowed a new version of Peter Parker (voiced by Hudson Thames) to save New York City from a wide variety of villains. A second season of that show is currently in development. Spider-Man continues to be one of the most popular heroes for the brand, even if it’s a different iteration than the one seen in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
Moving away from Peter Parker and the dangerous streets of New York City, Marvel Animation is also working on Eyes of Wakanda. The upcoming show will focus on different generations of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Shuri’s (Letitia Wright) family. It might be a long time before Marvel Studios can produce a live-action sequel to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But in the meantime, this animated series will allow viewers to return to the mighty nation of Wakanda.
Spider-Man ’94 hits the shelves on September 3.
