‘Paradise Lost’: James Gunn Gives New Update on the ‘Wonder Woman’ Prequel Series!!

Let’s be clear on one thing. James Gunn has a plan for the DCU. Since his days helming the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel, the filmmaker has gone on to spearhead a new age for DC alongside his longtime collaborator, Peter Safran, as co-heads of the studio. Creature Commandos was the first official entry into the new DC Universe, and that’s set to be followed up by the highly anticipated Superman movie starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Gunn has other plans to explore other DC characters, including the lasso-wielding Wonder Woman. A new Wonder Woman movie is officially happening, but that’s not the only Diana-centric content on the filmmaker’s mind.

Back in 2023, Gunn had announced a Wonder Woman television series, titled Paradise Lost. It’s set to be an origin story for the legendary Paradise Island, aka Themyscira. Per Entertainment Weekly, Gunn discussed the upcoming series, saying, “Paradise Lost is moving along.” The show’s production phase has been somewhat of a drag and Gunn admits as much. When quizzed on the connection between both, the filmmaker states the show is “different” but it’s still “connected” to the movie, given that Diana Prince herself is “from f—ing Themyscira, so…” Typical Gunn response, won’t you agree? It’s great to see that the future of Wonder Woman within the DCU has begun to clear up, especially after seeing the uncertainty that trailed Wonder Woman 3 being cancelled.

Gunn might have a plan for the character, but the question regarding who plays Diana remains uncertain. After seeing Henry Cavill step aside from playing Superman to be replaced by Corenswet, rumors of Gal Gadot not returning to play the Amazonian princess have persisted. Gunn and Safran have not commented on the casting yet, but the pair are clear-eyed about the story they wish to pursue with Paradise Lost. Safran previously described it as a “Game of Thrones-type story” which involves “all the darkness and drama and political intrigue behind this society of only women.” Gunn did reveal the questions that would require answering about the home of the Amazons, saying, “How did this society of women come about? What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are all the games that they play with each other to get to the top?

James Gunn Has Not Forgotten About ‘Sgt. Rock’

The shakeup of DC Studios has seen several projects and characters taking a backseat while the roadmap is being put together. One of the studio’s delayed movies is the film Sgt. Rock, which has reportedly been postponed. Despite the project’s slow nature of progress, Gunn confirmed that it remains in active development but requires a few tweaks before cameras roll. “I feel like we’re in a pretty good place,” Gunn said about Sgt. Rock. “We’re still moving forward, but it’s not going to be … What would [DC Studios co-head Peter Safran] want me to say here? … So it’s still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.”

Superman releases July 11.
