Cillian Murphy lit the world on fire two years ago with his performance in Oppenheimer, and now the Oscar-winning star is back with another project that just got a thrilling new update. Netflix has officially debuted the first look at Murphy alongside Jay Lycurgo (The Batman) in Steve, the upcoming drama that’s coming to the platform later this summer. The film is a reimagining of Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy, and Porter was even brought on to adapt the screenplay from his book, with Tim Mielants directing. The film is set in the mid-90s and follows Steve (Murphy), a headteacher at a troubled boarding school, fighting against closure. In comes Shy (Lycurgo), a teen stuck between his past and his future who battles against his inner desire for self-destruction and violence while coming to terms with his fragility.
Murphy will also produce the film along with Alan Moloney and Tina Pawlik, with Porter also serving as an executive producer on the project. This will also not be Murphy and director Tim Mielants’ first time working together. The duo first teamed nearly 10 years ago when Mielants directed six episodes of Peaky Blinders, and they also reunited last year for Small Things Like These, the period drama that also stars Emily Watson and is currently streaming on Hulu. Small Things Like These was Murphy’s first role post-Oppenheimer, and just a few years ago, he also suited up as Emmett in John Krasinski’s horror sequel, A Quiet Place Part II. Murphy is also attached to star in the upcoming historical epic, Blood Runs Coal, which comes from John-Henry and Jez Butterworth.
Cillian Murphy Is Returning to the World of ‘Peaky Blinders’
Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the Peaky Blinders movie, which has been titled The Immortal Man. It’s unclear at this time when the film will be released or if it will receive any kind of theatrical premiere or go straight to streaming, but original creator Steven Knight returned to write the script with Tom Harper directing. Harper helmed several episodes during the first season of Peaky Blinders. Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, Stephen Graham, and Tim Roth will also star in The Immortal Man, along with Jay Lycurgo, who is teaming up with Murphy for Steve.
Steve is coming to Netflix this summer.
