2023’s supernatural horror When Evil Lurks, gave fans a nightmare for days. Directed by Demián Rugna, the possession horror flick garnered praises from audiences and critics alike for its violence, jump scares, and thematic concerns. From beginning to end, the movie is full of thrilling plot points, and lingering effects of the violence. In a new interview, Rugna revealed that a sequel is on the way.
Speaking during an episode of La Broma Infinita from the Argentine streaming channel Gelantina (via Bloody Disgusting), Rugna reveled the status of the script and the fact that it has found the funding to start filming, he said, “We have part two written, yes, and we’re just waiting for the funding to come through. We have to make some script modifications to make it perfect, but the studio that wants to make it is already there.” While Rugna doesn’t reveal the studio backing the project, the original feature was backed by Shudder, the studio behind many horror films like Oddity, Late Night With the Devil, Speak No Evil, and others. Fans can rest assured that we are a step closer to the sequel, while Rugna stayed tight-lipped about any cast or plot details.
What to Expect From ‘When Evil Lurks’ Sequel?
While exorcism is a favorite sub-genre garnering many fan-favorite movies over the years, When Evil Lurks up the ante by its sudden and very graphic violence, and a plot that refuses any hope of having a happy ending. The movie is widely considered a modern horror perfection and has a 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating. Fans can expect the same distinct kind of storytelling from Rugna as he previously explained his scripting process to Collider, saying,
“Even when I’m trying not to make humor in my movies, like Terrified or When Evil Lurks, the black humor came along. I can’t avoid it. It is a part of me, of my style. I tried, all the time, to give some shock to the audience and then obviously, some relax. I need to relax them to strike, to punch them again, and the humor is a good path to that.”
The original movie follows a pair of brothers, Pedro and Jaime, who find a mutilated corpse near their property and convene with the locals to dump it. Things take a turn when the brothers learn that the odd happenings in their village are the cause of a spirit that’s found its way into a local man waiting for the proper rituals to rid his body of the demon. As an escape attempt ensues, Jamie and Pedro find themselves on edge, racing against imminent danger to shake the evil spirit’s clutches.
