‘The Last Train to New York’: James Wan Provides Update on Probably Canned ‘Train to Busan’ Remake!!

Two months ago, it was reported that Timo Tjahjanto was still interested in working on the American remake of Train to Busan, titled The Last Train to New York. And it’s not just him. Film producer James Wan has also expressed interest in bringing this remake to life and shared some details about what this horror feature would be about.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wan stated that The Last Train to New York is something he and the folks at Atomic Monster are still passionate about making. And while the feature was pulled from Warner Bros‘ release schedule in 2022, the film producer shared details on its plot, revealing that it takes place in the same universe as Train to Busan and follows the same epidemic that occurred in the South Korean feature. But despite his excitement for the project, he, too, has no idea what’s going on, nor does he have any knowledge of whether the project will continue.

That’s definitely still a passion project of ours…… Creatively, it takes place in the same world as Train to Busan. It’s happening epidemically around the world. So if Train to Busan is this particular slice of the story in South Korea, we want Train to New York to be the one set in America. Everything about it is really exciting. I hope that could get off the ground eventually. Got to be honest with you, I’m not quite sure where it sits right now.”

In 2016, Variety reported that Gaumont acquired the English-language remake rights. Two years later, it was announced that Atomic Monster and Coin Operated would co-produce the project, with Warner Bros. distributing it. It wasn’t until 2021 that the official name for the English remake was announced, along with its release date; however, the project was pulled from its release schedule a year later. Since then, there hasn’t been any news on whether the project will resume or remain on indefinite hiatus. Additionally, an official cast list was never announced, so it’s currently unknown who will lead this horror feature.

What’s ‘Train To Busan’ About?

Released in 2016, Train to Busan is an award-winning South Korean action-horror movie in which a zombie outbreak spreads across South Korea, forcing survivors to head towards a quarantine zone in Busan. This feature was a huge success. Not only did it receive high praise from fans and critics alike on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also generated $92 million at the global box office, as well as opening doors to releasing a prequel and sequel. It also received numerous accolades between 2016 and 2017, such as a Saturn Award Nomination for “Best Horror Film.”

Train to Busan is available to stream on Netflix.
