Henry Golding offered a crazy rich update about the future of the Crazy Rich Asians franchise. While appearing alongside his The Old Guard 2 co-star, Charlize Theron, on a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, the A Simple Favor star opened up about the highly-anticipated continuation of the story which started with the box office-dominating 2018 film. After being asked by Cohen about where the team was at in the creative process, Golding said,
“Something’s been made. They’re actually gonna do a series. Aiming for first quarter even next year. There are scripts hanging around, not passed on yet, so I haven’t read anything.”
As Cohen is quick to point out, the first quarter of 2026 is just a few months away, so production better get moving if it has any hopes of staying on schedule. The episodic follow-up was first announced last summer, with plans firming up earlier this year which included the project landing a home with HBO’s streamer, Max. For now, we know that the storyline will center around Kevin Kwan’s book of the same name, with Joy Ride helmer Adele Lim attached as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Lim previously co-penned the script for Jon M. Chu’s cinematic makeover, so the small-screen telling is in good hands.
Meanwhile, those waiting for a feature-length follow-up to the original film are still in luck — things are just taking longer than anticipated. As lead writer, Amy Wang, previously told The Direct,
“I am very sorry to disappoint… As far as I know, it will still happen, but it’s just that everyone’s taking their time. Everybody wants to make the script perfect and great. And you know, they want the sequel to be better than the past, so, yeah.”
What’s Next For Henry Golding?
As mentioned, Golding’s appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen coincided with the upcoming arrival of his new Netflix film, The Old Guard 2. Along with Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction), the actor is one of the new additions to the film series that got its start in 2020 with The Old Guard. Golding’s Watch What Happens Live co-guest, Theron, stars in the high-octane feature that centers around a group of immortal mercenaries. Filling out the rest of the returning cast is a lineup that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Life of Chuck), Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone), KiKi Layne (Coming 2 America), Vân Veronica Ngô (Furies), Marwan Kenzari (Black Adam) and Luca Marinelli (Paternal Leave).
