After two months at the box office, the Ryan Coogler-directed horror, Sinners, has made its way to streaming, making it available to a wider audience who might want to sink their teeth into the film. The film’s time at the box office established it as one of the biggest hits of 2025, and director Coogler has been rightly praised for delivering on the project. With a gross of $364 million on a reported $90 million budget, Sinners has become the fifth-biggest horror movie in global box office history. There is significant interest in the project, so will we get a sequel?
While it feels like getting a sequel seems like a no-brainer, director Coogler does not seem as excited about the prospect as much as most Sinners fans. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler was asked about whether Sinners would get a sequel. The director cast doubt on the possibility, while not explicitly confirming or denying the chances of another Sinners film. He explained that Sinners was “always intended to be a full meal of a movie,” while noting his desire to take a “break from franchise filmmaking” having worked on both the Creed and Black Panther franchises. The director’s comments in full read:
“It’s tough to say now. I mean, it was always intended to be a full meal of a movie. You never want to close the door on anything, but it was actually a break from franchise filmmaking for me. So I wanted to make something that was complete and let audiences take it.”
Coogler‘s comments strongly suggest that those holding out for a Sinners sequel are likely to be disappointed. The entire project has always seemed highly personal for the director, and this was summed up in the incredible deal struck with Warner Bros. Pictures, which will see the film’s rights revert to him in 25 years. While Warner Bros. Pictures might want a sequel, there isn’t a clear pathway towards that with the main cast. Which suggests the introduction of a new cast with the hopes of striking the perfect balance once more.
Ryan Coogler Has Another Franchise To Get Back to
While Coogler might not be interested in a Sinners franchise, there is one franchise he is likely to return to in the near future. The MCU‘s Black Panther franchise introduced Coogler to many via its 2018 MCU film starring Chadwick Boseman. It was an incredibly successful outing, grossing over $1.3 billion, and saw Coogler return to direct the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The gifted director is poised to return for another stint with Black Panther 3, and in incredibly exciting news, legendary actor Denzel Washington will star in the film, although it’s unclear who he’ll play. Washington‘s involvement in the film was confirmed by Coogler recently, in a conversation with NBA legend Carmelo Anthony.
Black Panther 3 does not have an official release date from Marvel.
