Superman will fly into theaters in less than 10 days, and writer/director James Gunn has finally shed some light on a major DCU connection. Superman will introduce the world to David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, and he’s expected to be the face of the franchise going forward. Fans have been extremely curious about who will take over the mantle of the DCU’s Batman, another character that has all the bravado to be on the DCU’s Mount Rushmore. However, Batman: The Brave and the Bold has had a much more challenging road to theaters than Superman, and it’s still unclear who is going to play The Dark Knight in the DCU.
Speaking with ExtraTV to promote Superman, though, James Gunn was asked how Corenswet’s Superman, someone very “in touch with his human side,” is going to react to seeing “a man dressed up as a bat.” Gunn didn’t shy away from the question and responded by saying, “We don’t know he hasn’t already seen a man dressed as a bat.” This means Superman and Batman could have already interacted in the DCU, even if The Dark Knight won’t make an appearance until further down the line.
This development comes mere days after The Batman director Matt Reeves confirmed that the script for The Batman Part II is complete. The sequel to the 2021 hit Batman movie has been in limbo for a while now, so much so that the film has been delayed until 2027. Gunn has, however, called for the public to let Matt Reeves finish his work on the film in peace, despite the string of delays.
Could Robert Pattinson Be the DCU’s Batman?
Fans have speculated that Robert Pattinson could make the move from Matt Reeves’ Batman universe to the DCU side of things and take over the role of The Dark Knight for James Gunn. However, Gunn has publicly debunked this several times, but there are other factors that allude to it not being a good choice. Pattinson’s Batman is young when we first meet him in The Batman, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold tells the story of an older Batman with a son. Someone like Alan Ritchson or Jensen Ackles is a much more fitting choice to play the DCU’s Batman.
Superman flies into theaters on July 11.
