‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Season 2 Finds Its Leads in Sophie Thatcher & Mark Eydelshteyn!!

In 2024, Prime Video took a chance on the world of espionage, and it left with an Emmy-nominated spy drama Mr. & Mrs. Smith for its troubles. The announcement for a second season followed some months after, and while we expected filming to kick off soon after, that didn’t materialize. That delay probably stemmed from the fact that series stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine had not been confirmed for a return. Ultimately, it has been confirmed that the pair, who performed expertly in Season 1, will not return for a sophomore run. In their place, Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher is set to be the new lead alongside a star from Anora, Mark Eydelshteyn. The exact stories behind their characters remain to be seen, but they are likely to be another rogue spy couple.

Thatcher‘s biggest role yet is playing the teenage Natalie in Yellowjackets. Other credits include roles in The Book of Boba Fett, The Boogeyman, Heretic, and the Drew Hancock-directed Companion. Thatcher‘s career also has a sprinkling of television roles in Chicago Med and The Exorcist. Eydelshteyn arrives on the back of his breakout performance in Sean Baker’s Anora. He also has credits in Strana Sascha and the acclaimed Russian television series Monastery. Expectations were high for the first season, and those will most likely accompany Eydelshteyn and Thatcher into the coming season. Season 2 will look to dominate Prime Video’s charts for several weeks, just like its predecessor.

While Glover and Erskine are set to step aside from the lead roles, Glover will remain a part of the behind-the-scenes action. Glover is a co-creator of the series with Francesca Sloane, a partnership that has worked previously with Atlanta. Ahead of Season 2, Glover will return as an executive producer in Season 2, while Sloane will take up the reins once more as showrunner and executive producer. Exactly how the second season merges with its first season, given the cliff-hangering nature of its conclusion, remains to be seen.

Season 2 of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Is Poised To Be An Entirely Different Story

The Prime Video series was able to match much of the effortless charisma of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Following its swift renewal, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, said that they’re looking forward to creating “new adventures” in this series. This suggests that Eydelshteyn and Thatcher‘s story might be entirely separate from Season 1. “We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Salke said at the time. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane.
