Most people love a franchise and, apparently, so does streaming giant Netflix, which announced in February 2025 it had greenlit an eight-episode television series off-shoot based on the smash-hit action sensation Extraction. The action movie series is one of the few original movie franchises on Netflix’s roster, and it is led by none other than Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth. The upcoming spin-off series will be headlined by Omar Sy, as revealed earlier in the year. According to What’s On Netflix, production on the first season is scheduled to begin in December 2025 and will run through to early to mid-2026. As for filming locations, the report reveals that at least a part of it would be filmed in North Africa, Morocco to be precise. The Hemsworth-led films are also famed for globe-trotting with filming locations in India, Thailand, Australia, and the Czech Republic. Initial reports had suggested that filming would begin in September 2025, but it seems that has been pushed back.
The revelation regarding the production start window is accompanied by further news that veteran TV director Louise Hooper has boarded the project. Hooper has a long-standing relationship with Netflix, having worked on Treason, The Sandman, and The Witcher over the years. The director’s credits are not streamlined to Netflix, with other projects, such as Rings of Power, Inside Number 9, and Flesh & Blood, under his belt. In a project that has the highly experienced Glen Mazzara serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, Hooper comes onboard to direct some episodes of the new series.
The Extraction film series debuted on Netflix in 2020 and proved a huge pandemic hit, with a sequel following in 2023. Now, the franchise is set to grow with Sy leading the charge on-screen under the creative leadership of Mazzara. Per the official synopsis, the spin-off has the following premise:
“Set in the high-octane world of ‘Extraction,’ this action thriller follows a mercenary (Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.”
Sy is fresh off the release of his action thriller, Shadow Force, and is currently filming the Season 4 of Lupin. Joining Sy on set for the Extraction series will be Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi will executive produce for AGBO, alongside Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. The Russo brothers have been prime pillars of the Extraction franchise so far, with Joe penning the screenplay for both projects. Hargrave had served as director for both. Joe and Anthony Russo also suggested in October 2024, that there were concrete plans in place for Extraction 3 to begin filming sometime in 2025. What impact the Sy-led series has had on that project remains unknown, but at the time, Joe commented, saying, “We’re in the middle of working on that story right now. Hard at work. We’re hoping to go into production on it next year,” adding, “It’s definitely filming next year. I’m just being cagey because it’s more fun.”
