When a good action franchise comes along, we often look to keep it around for a while longer. That is exactly the case for the action film series, Kingsman, which stars Taron Egerton as Eggsy. The franchise was seen as Egerton’s big break, as he appeared as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in the 2014 film, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Following a successful outing at the box office and with critics, a sequel arrived in 2017, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, but it failed to match its predecessor in any of the aforementioned categories. A third installment has long been discussed, but the project remains firmly in development purgatory. Now, Egerton has recently rebuffed the explanation offered for the delay.
The Kingsman franchise is helmed by director Matthew Vaughn, who has been consistently mulling over a third film, Kingsman 3 (he’s also discussed making a sequel to the franchise’s prequel, The King’s Man. Vaughn had previously revealed that he was working on the film’s script, while also stating that Egerton’s busy schedule was partly to blame for the lengthy delay. However, while speaking in an interview with The Playlist, Egerton pushed back on that suggestion while expressing enthusiasm about the movie and noting that he just recently spoke with the director. The actor’s comments read:
“Is that what he said? Yeah, he’s so funny. He did call me on Friday night, actually. Yeah, look, we both want to do it. And I know Colin [Firth] is open to doing it, too. I think the interesting thing will be figuring out whether we all see the same thing. I love Matthew. Matthew is like family to me. I really think there’s a brilliant story to tell with the third Kingsman. And I still think it will happen.”
The 2014 film introduced the world to Cockney lad, Gary Unwin, who, through the guidance of Harry Hart (Colin Firth), is trained to become a member of Kingsman. A Royal Marines dropout soon becomes an efficient spy for a secret society formed during World War I to protect the United Kingdom and the world from global threats. After the destruction of the British spy agency in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Kingsman 3 — which could potentially be called Kingsman: The Blue Blood — will mark a new beginning. With Eggsy and Harry saved by The Statesmen (the American equivalent to Kingsman), the pair look to rebuild the agency with the support provided by their American colleagues.
Matthew Vaughn Has Clear Ideas for ‘Kingsman 3’
Egerton is not the only one to have expressed an interest in returning for a threequel. Co-star Firth and director Vaughn seem equally interested in returning. Egerton’s interest runs deep, so much so that the actor has ideas of his own regarding how Kingsman 3 might play out. He is not alone as well, with Vaughn previously revealing what audiences might encounter in a third film, with Eggsy and Hart’s relationship being tested further. The director’s comments read:
“Eggsy and Harry [will be in it], obviously. But it’s the gang coming back together and it’s one of those moments that…when we wrote the screenplay, it was very much about, okay, I saw how people loved the relationship of Eggsy and Harry. So we just came up with this thing, what could be the ultimate reason for them to either fall in love or to hate each other forever? So that’s what this movie is all about is will they or won’t they, let’s just say.”
