‘Supernatural’: Main Stars Pitch Ideas for Future Revival of the Horror Series!!

It’s been half a decade since Supernatural went off the air after a monumental 15-season run, and still, fans are asking — nay, demanding — for the story to continue. Soon, we’ll partially get what we’re dreaming of when Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins reunite in the fifth and final season of The Boys, which was also created by Supernatural’s Eric Kripke. And, while seeing them together again in the explosively diabolical universe will semi-scratch the itch, we’re still pulling for some sort of Supernatural follow-up.

While chatting with TV Insider on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Supernatural pilot, the three besties weighed in about what they’d like to see should the series ever resurface. For Collins, he said “a puppet show” would be the best way to bring the gang back together, while Padalecki joked, “Anime.” But, everyone was on the same page with Ackles’ response of “Marionettes,” as they all laughed while chiming in unison, “Team America!” in reference to Trey Parker and Matt Smith’s 2004 puppet-centered action flick, Team America: World Police.

On a more serious note, Ackles admitted,

We’re all a lot older than we were 20 years ago. I don’t know if I have 22 episodes of Supernatural in me. I think a limited series would be great.”

What a ‘Supernatural’ Reboot Could Look Like

While each of the guys has some terrific ideas about how to bring Supernatural back, Ackles says that he’s given some thought about how things would have shaped up differently had the series gone straight to streaming instead of network television, explaining,

I’ve thought about this because we’ve been asked what would the show have looked like had it been on a streamer. And it would’ve been different. It would’ve been a little more R-rated. But part of me feels like, because of what we did for so long and what the tone is, I feel like changing that now might be doing it a disservice. I could see the benefit in keeping it like a broadcast show.”

Both Ackles and Padalecki said that despite being a “broadcast television” production, they felt that the series still “pushed the envelope.” Meanwhile, Collins admitted to having previously picked Kripke’s brain about the potential of a sequel-series, teasing,

I asked [series creator] Eric Kripke, ‘If you ever did a reboot of Supernatural, what do you think it would be?’ And he said he would want it to be as horrifying as possible.”

Supernatural is now streaming on Netflix.
